American Airlines Will Put Starlink Wi-Fi on Its Entire Mainline Fleet

American Airlines will install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service on its entire mainline fleet, with installations beginning in early 2027. The rollout will cover more than 1,000 aircraft and reach more than 165 million customers who fly on the carrier’s mainline aircraft each year.

American previously announced plans to equip more than 500 Airbus aircraft. The expanded agreement will also cover more than 530 Boeing aircraft, including narrowbody and widebody planes, according to Reuters. American lists its total mainline fleet as more than 1,030 aircraft.

What passengers can expect

The Starlink-equipped fleet will use SpaceX’s Performance Aero Terminal, an aircraft-mounted satellite internet system that American says can deliver speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second per terminal. The airline says the service will support activities such as streaming, gaming, real-time collaboration, messaging and web browsing.

American also says Starlink will provide connectivity from gate to gate. Actual performance will depend on the aircraft, route, network demand and applicable regulatory requirements.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Because installation is scheduled to begin in early 2027, the service will be introduced gradually rather than becoming available across the fleet at once.

Why the announcement matters

American’s decision expands Starlink beyond the Airbus aircraft included in its original plan and makes the service available across the carrier’s Airbus and Boeing mainline fleet. The airline operates more than 6,000 daily flights to more than 350 destinations in over 60 countries, according to its newsroom announcement.

For travelers, the immediate takeaway is that more American flights are expected to offer faster onboard internet as aircraft are upgraded. The company has not published a final aircraft-by-aircraft installation schedule.
