Anthropic Sets 5% of Shares for Public Benefit Fund

Anthropic said on October 18, 2026, that it plans to place 5% of its shares into a new fund for public-interest projects. The transfer is subject to stockholder approval.

Five percent awaits approval

Anthropic will create the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company, according to the company’s announcement.

The fund could grow as Anthropic grows. Its board could add another 2% of shares each time the company’s value rises by 50% above a baseline that has not yet been disclosed. Anthropic said the fund will not use its equity for lobbying or political contributions.

Possible focus on AI jobs

Anthropic said the fund could support large donations to nonprofits or direct payments to specific groups. It identified labor-market disruption as one possible focus.

The company said it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing AI’s effects on workers. Reuters reported that the new structure could give Anthropic more flexibility to support efforts related to AI’s impact on workers. (Reuters report)

Public-benefit share reaches 20%

The new fund would add to earlier commitments by Anthropic’s founders and employees. The company said roughly 20% of its shares would then be tied to the public good, and that about half of its employees participate in its equity-matching program.

Anthropic said it will publish more information about the fund’s governance, valuation milestones and activities in the coming months.
