Apple updated its App Store rules on October 16, 2026, setting clearer requirements for apps that let users create, upload, or share content with artificial intelligence. The changes address nonconsensual intimate imagery and features that apps conceal during review.
Apple targets intimate imagery
Under Apple’s current Guideline 1.2, apps that let users create, generate, upload, share, or otherwise contribute content must address nonconsensual intimate imagery. The guideline specifically includes AI content creation apps.
Apple requires those apps to filter objectionable material, provide a way to report offensive content, and let users block abusive accounts. Apps that lack appropriate safeguards or fail to correct identified violations may be removed from the App Store.
Developers face enforcement
Apple’s October 16 announcement says developers that do not meet these requirements may violate the Developer Code of Conduct. Repeated or serious violations can lead to removal from the App Store and the Apple Developer Program.
These rules apply to services that support user-generated content, including apps that create or share AI-generated images. Apple’s App Review Guidelines explain the requirements for those services and the consequences of failing to address abusive content.
Hidden features remain banned
Apple also clarified Guideline 2.5.19, which prohibits hidden, dormant, or undocumented features. The guideline says concealing features in an app binary can lead to App Store removal and termination of the developer account.
Apple’s October 16 update says the rule covers apps that misrepresent their purpose during review and later activate unreviewed capabilities. The updated policy announcement and the current App Review Guidelines contain the official requirements.
