OpenAI will combine usage allowances for ChatGPT and Codex for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers starting in December 2026. Advanced conversations and coding tasks will draw from one allowance, affecting developers and teams that use both services.
December plans affected
The change will apply to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business accounts, according to TechRepublic’s report published November 2. OpenAI has not announced the same December change for Free, Go, Enterprise, or Edu accounts.
Instant chats will remain outside the shared allowance. OpenAI has not published the exact limits or reset schedules for the new system, so subscribers who use advanced models heavily do not yet know how the change will affect their usage.
Advanced work uses one pool
The shared allowance will be measured in tokens, the units of information AI models process and generate. More complex tasks and more capable models generally use more tokens. As a result, a coding review in Codex and a demanding analysis in ChatGPT could reduce the same remaining allowance.
OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance describes shared allowances for Codex, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT for Excel, and Workspace Agents when those features are available on a plan. Its Work and Codex documentation says Work follows the same usage structure as Codex.
Limits remain unclear
OpenAI expects most subscribers will not need to wait for resets more often than they do now. However, the company has not published the allowance amounts or reset rules for the December system.
OpenAI says combined remaining usage and reset information will appear in account settings after the policy takes effect. The change accompanies its effort to integrate longer, multistep Work tasks into ChatGPT while keeping Codex focused on software development.
