Disney Moves to Absorb Character.AI’s Team as Chatbot Startup Enters Bankruptcy

Disney plans to hire most of Character.AI’s employees after the chatbot startup filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, creating uncertainty around the future of a service with a large user base. The proposed deal covers selected assets and does not transfer the entire Character.AI platform to Disney.

Disney targets 60 employees

A legal filing reported by TechCrunch says Disney will offer jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees. That is most of the startup’s workforce. The offers carry estimated annual compensation of about $60 million, and most employees who received offers have accepted them.

Character.AI’s former chief executive, Karandeep Anand, became Disney’s chief technology officer on October 2. Disney said the newly created role will help advance its technology strategy and strengthen how it serves fans.

App ownership remains unsettled

Character.AI filed for bankruptcy on October 12, 2026. As part of that process, Disney became the “stalking horse” bidder, which sets a starting offer while allowing another buyer to submit a higher one.

The proposed agreement covers a non-exclusive, perpetual license for selected intellectual property and claims, along with employee transition services, in exchange for $20 million. Character.AI’s announcement said the company intended to keep operating its platform while pursuing a court-supervised sale. The filing also cited legal, regulatory, and operational challenges.

Users face uncertainty

Because the proposed deal covers only selected assets, the court process could still change the service, its ownership, or its long-term availability. Character.AI’s announcement does not describe an immediate shutdown, but it also does not guarantee that the existing app, brand, or user experience will continue unchanged.

Another bidder could change the outcome. Disney’s hiring agreement would give the entertainment company access to much of Character.AI’s team even though its proposed asset deal is limited.
