Figma Moves Design and Code Into One AI Workspace

Figma is expanding its platform from a design tool into a shared workspace for product teams and AI agents. On October 15, the company announced that code layers were entering open beta and introduced Specs, a new way to keep product requirements, design decisions and technical context together.

Code layers reach open beta

Code layers let teams place working code beside visual designs on the Figma canvas. Figma says users can bring in existing code, connect GitHub repositories and create interactive prototypes backed by running code. The feature is rolling out in open beta on all plans, with a Full seat required to create code layers. (Figma; Figma Help Center)

Figma says creating and editing inside a code layer will be free on paid plans through November 4, 2026. After that date, code-layer tasks will use Figma AI credits. (Figma release notes)

Specs carries design context

Figma is also adding Specs, a shared container for Markdown, diagrams, design frames, code layers and other project decisions. Teams can use it to develop a product specification and pass that context to a coding agent through Figma’s Model Context Protocol server, the company says.

Specs is rolling out in open beta on the web, desktop and mobile apps for paid plans. Figma says a specification can preserve written intent, visual explorations and technical details in one shared place. (Figma)

Agents enter product workflows

These releases deepen Figma’s push into AI-assisted product development. TechCrunch reported that Figma had widened access to its canvas agent. Figma says the agent is now generally available and embedded on the design canvas. (TechCrunch; Figma)

The changes affect designers, product managers and software developers who use Figma to plan digital products. By putting design, code and project context in the same workspace, Figma is positioning its canvas as a place where teams and agents can work together.
