Germany and NVIDIA launch physical AI partnership for industry

Germany and NVIDIA are launching a partnership to develop artificial intelligence that can work in the physical world, including factories, robots and vehicles. The agreement combines Germany’s manufacturing expertise with NVIDIA’s AI technology and gives Europe a new push to build industrial AI at home.

The agreement was announced Monday during Germany’s Invest in Germany Summit. Germany’s federal government said the initiative will develop advanced models for “physical AI,” meaning systems that can understand and act in real-world environments. The project will use German industrial data and engineering knowledge and will connect with the government’s Industry 4.0 program (German federal government).

Germany targets physical AI

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said Germany should move quickly because its factories, carmakers and engineering companies already hold data that can help train industrial AI systems. He said AI will add to manufacturing skills rather than replace the physical work of building cars, machines and robots (Associated Press).

NVIDIA described the partnership as a way to combine German engineering with AI models, digital twins and simulation tools. Digital twins are computer models of real factories or machines that let engineers test changes before using them in the physical world (NVIDIA).

Factories become AI testbeds

The focus is broader than chatbots. The partners are targeting production planning, vehicle design, robotics and factory operations. NVIDIA said the effort will also encourage AI adoption among Germany’s small and midsize industrial companies, including specialized suppliers.

The agreement comes as European leaders seek AI-driven growth while worrying about dependence on U.S. technology companies. The Associated Press also reported that Europe lags the United States in building the data centers needed to train advanced AI systems.

Europe watches the rollout

The announcement does not set a public launch date or name a specific new model. Its immediate focus is joint development of physical AI models and wider adoption of industrial AI through Germany’s Industry 4.0 program.
