Google Cloud Unveils Gemini Agent to Run Enterprise Work Across Apps
Google Cloud introduced Gemini agent on Thursday, October 8, 2026, positioning it as a single AI worker that can answer questions, create content, write and run code, and complete multi-step assignments across an organization’s software. The announcement matters because it moves enterprise AI closer to delegation: users describe an outcome rather than manually directing every step.
Reuters reported that Gemini agent can connect to company systems and return completed work inside documents, email and developer environments. Google says it works directly with Google Workspace applications including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar. The company also says Gemini can be accessed through Microsoft 365 and Slack, integrated into third-party applications and used without a dedicated user interface.
One agent, multiple models and specialized workers
Google says Gemini agent can select the model best suited to each task. The company’s announcement says the system currently orchestrates across Google’s Gemini family and Anthropic’s Claude models, with support for additional private and open models planned. Google is presenting that model flexibility as a way to balance quality, speed and cost instead of sending every request to the largest available model.
The system can also create temporary sub-agents for complex assignments. Those sub-agents can work in parallel or in sequence, allowing a broader task to continue for hours or days. Organizations can create persistent “coworker agents” for roles such as project management or financial analysis. Google says these agents can have dedicated identities, persistent storage and access limited to the context provided by users or their teams.
That architecture creates new governance requirements. Google highlights identity and policy management, authorization controls, secure sandboxing, network gateways, administration and real-time spending limits as part of the platform. The controls are important because an agent with access to email, documents, calendars and business systems can create more value than a chatbot, but it can also make larger mistakes or expose more data if permissions are poorly configured.
What developers and companies should watch
Google Cloud says Gemini agent is designed to work across web, iOS and Android mobile devices, Windows and Mac desktops, command-line environments, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack. For developers, the most consequential change may be the single API and headless-agent model: an application can invoke Gemini without forcing users into a separate chat window.
Google’s broader Gemini at Work announcement also describes industry-specific capabilities for financial services and legal teams, including specialized tools, connectors and knowledge. The company says additional industry versions are planned for areas such as government, healthcare and retail.
Gemini agent is part of a rapidly intensifying race among cloud and AI companies to provide systems that act autonomously across applications. Its success will depend less on whether it can generate a plausible answer and more on whether organizations can define reliable permissions, review processes, audit trails and spending limits.
Availability
Google announced Gemini agent at its Gemini at Work 2026 event. The company’s announcement describes the capabilities and enterprise controls but does not provide a general consumer release date or public pricing. Businesses considering the service should follow Google Cloud’s availability notices and evaluate it first with narrowly scoped data access and human approval for consequential actions.
