Google’s $180 Fitbit Edge Replaces the Charge Line With a Screen and Replaceable Battery

Google’s $180 Fitbit Edge Replaces the Charge Line With a Screen and Replaceable Battery

Google launched the Fitbit Edge on Monday, positioning the $179.99 fitness tracker between the screenless Fitbit Air and the company’s Pixel Watch line. Google says the Edge will replace the Charge line, with preorders starting October 12 and shipments beginning October 27.

Fitbit Edge moves beyond the Charge 6 design

The Edge has a 1.34-inch oval display and includes automatic workout detection, an altimeter, a skin-temperature sensor and a new GPS chipset. Google says the GPS system improves accuracy during outdoor workouts by 40 percent compared with the previous generation.

The tracker is rated to last up to a week on a charge, and Google says a five-minute charge can provide a full day of power. Its replaceable battery is a first for Fitbit hardware, according to the launch coverage, and could extend the device’s useful life beyond the typical battery cycle of a fitness band.

October 27 shipments put the Edge between Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch

The Edge costs $179.99 in the United States, according to QZ’s report on the launch. That places it above the $99 Fitbit Air and below the Pixel Watch line, giving Google a midrange option for buyers who want a screen and built-in GPS without paying smartwatch prices.

Google is offering the Edge in Obsidian, Canyon, Fog and Olive Green. A Stephen Curry Edition costs $219.99 and is available in select countries. The tracker has no speaker or microphone, keeping it separate from Google’s smartwatch products.

Google’s health features may add a recurring cost

The Edge includes Health Guardian features for monitoring changes in health and wellness patterns, including blood-pressure trends, insulin-resistance trends and heart-rate alerts. Google’s own announcement says some Health Guardian features vary by device and region and may require a Google Health Premium subscription. The company describes the trend features as wellness tools, not real-time clinical measurements or medical diagnoses.

Check the Edge’s price and health features before ordering

  1. Compare the $179.99 Edge with the $99 Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch models before choosing a form factor.
  2. Confirm which Health Guardian reports and coaching tools require Google Health Premium.
  3. Check regional availability, including the Stephen Curry Edition, and review the October 27 shipping date before placing an order.

The Edge gives Google a clearer answer to consumers who found the Air too limited but the Pixel Watch too expensive or bulky. Its appeal will depend on whether the replaceable battery and broader health tools justify the higher price than Fitbit’s screenless tracker.
