Google Launches Universal Cart Across Search and Gemini

Google Launches Universal Cart Across Search and Gemini

Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on October 15, bringing products from different retailers into one shopping list across Google Search and the Gemini app. The feature gives Google a larger role in online shopping ahead of the holiday season.

Universal Cart spans retailers

Shoppers can save products from multiple stores while browsing Search or chatting with Gemini. Those items remain available across both Google services, allowing shoppers to return to one list instead of searching for each product again.

Universal Cart uses Google’s Shopping Graph, which the company says contains more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings. That information lets the cart monitor saved products for price drops and restocks.

Price alerts and payment savings

The cart can notify shoppers when an item becomes cheaper or returns to stock. It can also show relevant promotional codes and use information from Google Wallet to suggest payment methods with useful card benefits.

Google says shoppers can check out with Google Pay at participating merchants, including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and many Shopify stores. Shoppers can also transfer their selections to a merchant’s website to finish the order. Retailers remain responsible for the sale, order confirmation, and customer support.

Google expands agentic commerce

Universal Cart is part of Google’s broader effort to make its AI systems more useful during online shopping. The cart uses Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard designed to connect shopping agents, retailers, and payment systems.

Google previously described Universal Cart and UCP as part of its plan for “agentic commerce,” in which software helps manage parts of a purchase. In its earlier Universal Cart preview, Google said YouTube and Gmail support would follow.
