Google announced updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode on October 15, 2026, to make source links easier to see and use. The changes are designed to help people move from an AI-generated answer to the websites, news reports and creators behind it.
Inline links move higher
Google says it will show more inline links inside AI answers and place important links higher in responses more often. These links can take users directly to pages that explain a claim or provide more detail, making key sources easier to reach while people read.
Google is also testing a dedicated section near the top of some AI responses for official websites. The section will explain why each link may be useful. It is aimed at searches where only one or two websites are the right place to complete a task or find exact information. (Google announcement)
News coverage gets wider
Google is expanding prominent article carousels in AI Search to more regions and languages. The carousels are intended to surface timely reporting about developing topics and can highlight a user’s preferred sources. Google also says related links at the end of some AI answers will receive image thumbnails and a more noticeable design.
These changes build on Google’s effort to make sources more visible in AI Search. Android Authority reported that the new layout is intended to make sources clearer in both AI Overviews and AI Mode. (Android Authority report)
Creator profiles enter testing
Google has also started testing clickable creator and publisher names in video results within AI Mode. Selecting a name can open a Search profile with more information about that creator and their wider work. Google says eligible creators and publishers can learn about Search profiles through its support materials.
Google says it will continue adjusting the features based on how people use them. Their exact appearance and availability may vary by query, language, region and account.
