Google’s $180 Fitbit Edge Brings a Screen, AI Coaching and a Replaceable Battery

Google has launched the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker designed to sit between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. The device is available for preorder now and is scheduled to reach stores on October 27.

Fitbit Edge adds a 46% larger display without becoming a smartwatch

The Edge has Google’s largest and brightest tracker display to date, with 46% more viewing area than earlier Fitbit trackers. Its Hybrid OLED screen shows health statistics, workouts, notifications, weather and media controls, while a physical side button provides quick access during exercise.

The tracker is 11.5 millimeters thick. Google says its case is 45% lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12. The Edge works with most phones running Android 11 or later and iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later.

Seven-day battery life comes with repairability and faster charging

Google rates the Fitbit Edge for up to seven days of battery life under its test conditions. Five minutes of magnetic charging can provide up to a day of use, although actual endurance will vary with GPS, display settings and other features.

The Edge is Google’s first repairable fitness tracker, with a modular internal design and replaceable battery. It carries 5 ATM water protection and IP68 dust and water protection, but Google says it is not waterproof or dustproof.

Health Guardian keeps blood-pressure trends separate from medical diagnosis

Built-in sensors support continuous heart-rate monitoring, sleep and recovery analysis, skin-temperature tracking and an on-wrist ECG app in supported countries. Google Health Premium subscribers will also receive Health Guardian features that track blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends.

Those features are intended for general wellness and informational purposes, not diagnosis or treatment. Availability varies by country and device, and Google warns that users should not adjust medication or treatment based on the readings.

Preorder the Edge before its October 27 retail launch

  1. Open the Google Store or a retail partner and select the Fitbit Edge for $179.99.
  2. Choose a finish and band. A Stephen Curry Special Edition is available for $219.99.
  3. Connect the tracker to the Google Health app on a compatible Android phone or iPhone. Purchasers receive three months of Google Health Premium, after which the subscription is sold separately.

The Fitbit Edge can track more than 50 exercise modes and automatically recognize up to 100 workouts. Its main limitation is that several advanced coaching and trend features require Google Health Premium, an internet connection and regional support.
