Kroger Will Cut 3,000 Corporate Jobs as AI Reshapes Grocery Work

Kroger plans to eliminate 3,000 corporate jobs over the next three years as the U.S. grocery chain expands its use of artificial intelligence, making it one of the clearest signs yet that AI-driven restructuring is moving into everyday retail.

CEO Greg Foran disclosed the planned reductions in a memo to employees on Monday. He said Kroger must adopt new capabilities, reduce duplicative work and examine where work is best performed as technology changes how companies operate. The Associated Press reported the cuts on October 13.

3,000 Corporate Roles Targeted

The reductions will affect Kroger’s corporate workforce rather than its full store network. The company has about 409,000 employees and operates more than 2,700 stores under brands including Ralphs, King Soopers, Smith’s and Fred Meyer, according to the Associated Press.

Kroger has not published a detailed schedule identifying which departments or positions will be affected. The company’s memo frames the plan as a three-year restructuring rather than a single round of layoffs.

Kroger’s AI Roadmap

Kroger presented its broader AI strategy in September, describing a progression from assisted tools to augmented workflows and, in selected cases, more autonomous systems. The company said decisions about automation will depend on risk, repeatability and the need for human judgment.

That strategy combines customer and operational data with proprietary models, third-party models, shared infrastructure and governance controls. Kroger also said it is making AI literacy training and tools available to more than 400,000 associates.

Shopping Assistant Expands

Kroger’s AI Shopping Assistant is designed to help customers plan meals, find recipes and build shopping carts around budgets, dietary needs and personal preferences. The company launched the assistant across its family of companies’ websites and apps in July.

Kroger says the assistant can help customers plan meals, discover products and find value. The company is also developing AI tools for frontline teams that filter large volumes of notifications and surface the tasks requiring the most attention.

Retail Workforce Signal

The announcement links a major workforce decision directly to AI adoption, although Kroger also faces competition from Walmart, Aldi, Lidl and Amazon and is pursuing broader operating changes. The company says it serves more than 11 million customers daily.

Kroger will host an investor update on October 20, 2026. The company says management will discuss strategic priorities and its longer-term financial outlook at that event.
