Microsoft is bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into its Copilot app, allowing Frontier customers to create, edit, share and collaborate on Office files without leaving the AI workspace. The change makes Copilot a central starting point for Office work while keeping the files editable in the familiar Microsoft formats.
The update was reported by TechRadar on October 12, 2026, following Microsoft’s announcement of Office in Copilot. Users can start in Copilot Chat or Cowork, generate a document, spreadsheet or presentation, and continue editing it in the same experience.
Office in Copilot keeps editable files beside the conversation
Microsoft says users can ask Copilot to create a Word document, Excel workbook or PowerPoint presentation, then refine the file alongside the conversation. The experience includes direct editing, sharing, comments, coauthoring and real-time presence, according to Microsoft’s product announcement.
The Copilot app’s Library brings recent Word, Excel and PowerPoint files together with pages and AI-generated images created in Copilot or Office. Microsoft says files remain stored in OneDrive and retain their formatting, comments, sharing permissions and version history, along with applicable security, compliance and governance controls.
Frontier customers get access before a wider rollout
Office in Copilot is rolling out to Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork, Microsoft says. TechRadar likewise reports that the unified experience is currently limited to Frontier customers. The sources reviewed for this article do not provide a general-availability date for all Microsoft 365 users.
That limitation matters for organizations evaluating the feature. Access depends on the account and rollout channel, and administrators will need to consider existing permissions, compliance controls and data-governance policies before expanding use.
Use Office in Copilot in three steps
Open the Microsoft Copilot app through an eligible Frontier account and enter Chat or Cowork.
Describe the deliverable you need, such as a Word brief, an Excel budget or a PowerPoint presentation.
Open the generated file in the Copilot workspace, review the changes, collaborate with teammates and continue in the standalone Office app when needed.
Microsoft is making Copilot the starting point for workplace software
The update is part of Microsoft’s broader Copilot strategy. In a September 25 announcement, the company described Home as a unified starting point for Chat and Cowork, Code as a natural-language tool for building solutions, and Autopilot as a persistent agent for recurring work.
For now, the practical change is that eligible users can begin an Office task in Copilot and continue working on the resulting file without immediately switching applications. Microsoft’s next rollout decisions will determine how broadly that workflow reaches beyond the Frontier program.
