Nvidia Unveils Modular AI Factories for Europe

Nvidia introduced a modular design for large AI data centers at its GTC Berlin conference on October 21. The company says its DSX POD system could help Europe expand computing capacity faster as the region works to close a major gap with the United States.

DSX POD cuts build time

DSX POD packages NVIDIA Vera Rubin computing, networking, cabling, power equipment and liquid cooling inside factory-built modules. Nvidia says a prepared site could receive and connect a unit in as little as 14 days, compared with roughly six months for a traditional build.

The company is working with partners including Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo, Schneider Electric and Vertiv to deliver the systems worldwide. (NVIDIA)

Europe faces a compute shortage

The announcement addresses one of Europe’s biggest limits in AI: access to large-scale computing. The Associated Press reported that Europe has about 5% of the world’s AI computing capacity, compared with about 75% in the United States. That shortage makes it harder for European companies and researchers to train and run advanced models. (Associated Press)

At the Berlin event, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang urged European manufacturers and other industries to use their industrial data to develop AI systems. Nvidia highlighted Siemens, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen’s Audi as examples of companies applying AI to manufacturing, engineering and transportation.

Power and water remain constraints

Nvidia also presented DSX as an efficiency platform. The company says its designs can use closed-loop cooling and dry coolers to bring facility cooling-water use close to zero. At a 2-gigawatt deployment, Nvidia estimates potential savings of 54 million liters of water per day.

Nvidia says its DSX MaxLPS software is designed to produce the same AI output with up to 30% less power. Those figures are based on Nvidia’s own testing and partner evaluations. The company says the modular factories are planned for early 2027. (NVIDIA)
