OpenAI says it will build a humanoid robot and expects to show a demonstration in 2027. The plan moves the company from AI software into robots that can operate in the physical world.
OpenAI enters humanoid robotics
CEO Sam Altman confirmed the plan on the Sources podcast, according to Engadget. He also told Fortune that he expects a “cool demo” in 2027, while robots commonly walking in public are likely still several years away.
OpenAI has not announced the robot’s name, design, price, commercial release date, or manufacturing partner. The 2027 target is a demonstration milestone, not a product launch.
Robot intelligence comes first
Altman said a human-like form makes sense because the world is designed around people. Doors, keyboards, tools, and other common objects are built for human bodies.
He said the larger challenge is developing the robot’s “brain.” The system would need to understand sensor data, follow instructions, control its body, and adjust when conditions change.
Hiring shows hardware ambitions
OpenAI’s robotics careers page describes work across models, hardware, and real-world data collection. Engadget reported that the company’s listings covered motion control, state estimation, actuator control, whole-robot behavior, and machine-learning infrastructure.
Other OpenAI listings cover control systems and manufacturing. The manufacturing role includes custom motors, actuators, prototype builds, and production processes. Together, the listings show that OpenAI is working on physical hardware as well as software.
Commercial timing remains unclear
OpenAI has not said what the first demonstration will show or whether it will focus on factories, infrastructure work, homes, or research. Its job listings describe a robotics program exploring several physical forms.
For now, the company has announced a development plan and a possible 2027 demonstration, but not a commercial product.
