OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads to 26 additional countries, bringing the service to 89 markets worldwide. More businesses can now advertise inside ChatGPT, while users on the Free and Go plans may see sponsored content.
26 Countries Join Rollout
OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers have used ChatGPT since ads launched just over eight months ago. The company also said more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week to explore ideas, compare products and make decisions.
The expansion covers 14 additional countries in Latin America, along with countries such as Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. OpenAI said advertisers can buy campaigns through technology partners or its Ads Manager.
Free Users See Ads
Ads will appear on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free. OpenAI’s advertising FAQ also says Business and Education accounts will not receive ads, and accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 will not be shown advertising.
OpenAI says ads are clearly labeled and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s answers. Advertisers cannot shape, rank or change responses, the company says. It also says advertisers do not receive conversations, memories or personal details. The help page says advertisers receive only aggregated performance information, such as views and clicks.
OpenAI Sets Privacy Rules
OpenAI says its system may select ads using the current conversation. When personalization is enabled, it may also use limited signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience. The company says users can manage ad personalization and delete advertising data through its controls.
OpenAI said the next phase will add more ad formats, campaign goals, buying options and measurement tools. The company says advertising can help support wider access to ChatGPT while keeping ads separate from its answers.
