Samsung’s $80 Billion Profit Forecast Shows How AI Is Reshaping the Chip Supply Chain
Samsung Electronics expects third-quarter operating profit of approximately 107.4 trillion Korean won, or about $80.2 billion, as demand for semiconductors used in artificial intelligence systems drives strong memory-chip earnings. The forecast shows how the AI buildout is affecting the wider technology industry, not only companies that sell AI software and cloud services.
Samsung said on October 8 that third-quarter revenue would be approximately 195 trillion won. Operating profit is expected to rise 782.5% from 12.17 trillion won a year earlier, according to the company’s preliminary earnings guidance. Reuters reported that the profit estimate was above the average analyst forecast.
Why AI memory matters
AI systems depend on advanced memory products, including high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which helps processors move data quickly during demanding workloads. Samsung is one of the world’s largest suppliers of memory chips and a major HBM producer.
The company’s results matter beyond the semiconductor industry because memory is used in servers, PCs, smartphones and other electronics. Strong demand from AI infrastructure can tighten supply and increase component costs for manufacturers. Reuters reported that the memory-chip boom is benefiting Samsung’s semiconductor business while creating cost pressure for its smartphone and consumer-electronics operations.
If the preliminary figures are confirmed, Samsung’s operating profit will exceed 100 trillion won for the first time. The company is also on track for a fourth consecutive quarterly record for revenue and operating profit, according to Yonhap News Agency.
A supply chain under pressure
Samsung’s preliminary guidance does not include a breakdown by business division, so it does not yet show exactly how much of the result came from memory chips or other semiconductor products. The company’s final earnings report is scheduled for October 29, 2026.
For consumers and businesses, the immediate significance is that AI demand can affect products far beyond chatbots. Memory availability and pricing influence the cost and design of servers, computers, phones and storage devices. If supply remains tight, manufacturers may continue prioritizing data-center customers or pass higher component costs to buyers.
Samsung’s full results should provide a clearer view of which memory products are driving the surge and how the company’s other businesses are managing higher component costs. For now, the forecast is a strong indication that the AI boom is also a semiconductor and supply-chain story with global consequences.
