SpaceX has imposed new speed limits on satellite terminals used by Ukrainian military drones, disrupting several missions and raising questions about access to a communications system that Ukraine relies on in the war.
160 km/h connection limit
Ukrainian officials said the restriction appeared overnight on October 14 without advance warning. The military Starshield service reportedly loses its connection when a moving terminal exceeds about 160 kilometers per hour, or 100 miles per hour. (Associated Press)

Drone missions disrupted
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Ukraine's defense forces received no warning and that several missions were disrupted. The Associated Press reported that slower-flying attack drones could become easier targets for Russian defenses.
The reports concern Starshield, the military version of SpaceX's satellite communications service. Ukrainian sources said regular Starlink terminals and Starshield were being treated differently, but the reported restriction affected military terminals operating while moving.
Ukraine seeks explanations
Ukraine's Defense Ministry said it was collecting information from military units and contacting the United States, SpaceX and NATO partners. It also said backup communication channels were being checked and established. (Ukrainska Pravda)
Neither SpaceX nor the White House offered an immediate public explanation for the change, according to the Associated Press. There was no independent evidence that the restriction was ordered by the White House.
Private networks become strategic
The episode shows how a commercial satellite network can affect military operations when it becomes part of a country's communications infrastructure. Ukraine's immediate focus is determining the scope of the restriction and maintaining drone and battlefield communications.
