SpaceX Picks Qualcomm for Nationwide Starlink Mobile 5G Network

SpaceX has selected Qualcomm to help build Starlink Mobile’s nationwide U.S. terrestrial 5G network. The agreement moves Elon Musk’s satellite company closer to competing directly with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Deployment is expected to begin in 2027 across tens of thousands of cell sites.

Qualcomm supplies 5G infrastructure

Under the multiyear agreement, Qualcomm will provide Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 platforms, radio equipment, baseband processing and commercial-grade Layer 1 software. These components handle radio and signal processing inside cellular base stations. Qualcomm described the agreement as its biggest 5G deal yet, but neither company disclosed its financial terms. Qualcomm said the system will use 64-transmit, 64-receive Massive MIMO radios. This design can direct signals more precisely and support more network traffic. The initial deployment will focus on terrestrial 5G, while the architecture is designed to support later network upgrades.

Starlink combines space and ground

The planned service will combine SpaceX’s satellite network with conventional ground-based cell sites. The Federal Communications Commission has said SpaceX’s spectrum assignment could expand coverage and capacity, especially in hard-to-reach parts of the United States, while increasing competition in mobile wireless service. SpaceX has been assembling spectrum and holding acquisition talks with Boost Mobile, according to Axios. The planned network is more conventional than earlier ideas involving small cellular equipment attached to Starlink terminals. (Axios)

Consumers face a new carrier

The project could eventually give U.S. consumers another nationwide wireless option, but service is not launching immediately. SpaceX still needs to build or secure thousands of sites, operate a customer network and compete with carriers that already have extensive coverage and established subscribers.

The planned network may also support connected vehicles, delivery drones, robots and other devices that need coverage outside traditional urban networks. Its first major test will be whether SpaceX can turn its satellite advantage into reliable, affordable ground-based service.
