Workday is expanding its Sana agentic platform beyond its own applications, allowing employees to use HR and finance agents inside Claude, Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Teams and Slack. The announcement matters because it puts governed business actions inside the conversations and collaboration tools many employees already use.
Sana crosses workplace silos
Workday said employees will be able to make requests in plain language and have Sana coordinate the appropriate Workday agents behind the scenes. A manager could ask Sana in Microsoft Copilot to model a planning decision, after which the system checks permissions, uses company data to compare options, records the selected plan in Workday and preserves an audit trail.
The company also described proactive uses. After a business trip, Sana could identify an unfiled expense inside Claude, apply the employer’s policy and prepare the report for review. These functions move the platform beyond answering questions toward completing tasks that involve multiple systems, approvals and decisions.
Policies stay in Workday
Workday said connected AI platforms will not receive raw access to Workday data. Sana performs the reasoning, applies the customer’s permissions and policies, coordinates approvals and records the resulting action. That design gives companies a single control point even when work begins in different AI assistants.
The company said customers do not have to connect every outside tool to every individual agent. A single Sana connection can expose agents built by Workday, a customer or a partner across supported platforms. New capabilities can then appear in connected tools while policy checks remain anchored in Workday.
Availability splits by platform
Workday said self-service with Sana is generally available in Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Teams and Slack. The broader Sana experience on those platforms is planned for late 2026. Sana in Claude Cowork is available in early access, and Sana in Copilot Cowork is expected to enter early access in late 2026.
The distinction is important for enterprise customers evaluating the announcement: some cross-platform capabilities are available now, while more autonomous experiences are still rolling out. Workday also said unreleased services and features may change or may not be delivered as planned.
Workday broadens agent control
The announcement came during Workday Rising, where the company introduced additional agent capabilities for HR, payroll, finance and IT. CRN reported that Workday also presented an agent system of record and announced plans to acquire C1.ai, whose technology is intended to govern what agents can access across enterprise systems.
Workday says more than 11,500 organizations use its platform, including more than 65% of the Fortune 500. If the integrations reach the promised scope, the company is positioning Sana as a governed action layer between general-purpose AI assistants and the business processes that control hiring, expenses, payroll and finance.
